For something that we have so long to figure out, we rarely seem to have it all sorted. Life can be confusing and daunting to navigate, even in our later years. Interestingly, you can ask a middle schooler what they plan to do in life, and they’ll usually have a confident answer. As you go up the grade levels, this confidence wavers significantly. Once you reach college-age students, the question becomes anxiety-inducing and may not always have a solid answer. By the time you reach your early twenties, the answer isn’t a mere hypothetical anymore.

At this point, it’s your action plan, one with very real consequences. This significance often makes us freeze up, afraid to commit to any further plans that we might not know how to make happen. Part of this fear comes from the idea that if we know where we want to go, then we must know all the steps to get there. This is hardly ever the case. If it were, then everyone would be highly successful with no failure or trial and error. If we all knew exactly what to do to achieve our goals, there wouldn’t be much of a challenge. Capturing this horses running photo was a challenge.

The reality is that we all have a very limited plan of how to get to where we want. Naturally, it doesn’t feel great to think that you’re underprepared. However, it’s important to remember that you are usually prepared enough. Even when we take on a journey by car, we don’t see the whole path in front of us. In reality, the headlights only illuminate a few hundred feet at a time. As you drive, you start to see the parts of the road that were once dark and unknown to you. We make our journeys by getting by a little at a time. What’s important is that we know where we want to go and that we’re heading in the right direction. The minute details can be worked out we get to them.

There’s no point in stalling the whole journey while we try to work out every detail along the way. Instead, it is better to take things in smaller chunks, go through life one day at a time. Our goals may even shift and evolve. Being open to change and unpredictability makes it easier for us to cross those bridges when we get to them. We can find comfort in knowing that we are not alone and that many people are also going through the same thing. Remember what is valuable to you and the end goal, but be sure to enjoy the journey.
