HORSE PRINT | FEARS
Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer. Early Evening.
I have been shooting at this location for several years. The water is about waist high, muddy, and it's known to have sudden drops and holes. I have stayed away from getting in the water due to the fear of falling in and ruining my equipment.
I am never happy with my images from this location, every time before I get to this location to photograph, I say to myself "this time it will be better." But it never happens.
This time, I did something different. I asked myself, "what kind of photograph will make me happy?" The only way to achieve that photograph was to put on waders and get into the dirty water. It was nerve-wracking once I got in the water because I could not stand in one spot for a long time, my feet kept sinking. I was also concerned if the horses came too close, the splash of salty water would ruin my equipment. Though I had all the excuses, I had one reason to get in. I wanted a good photograph of this location. I worked with my fears, took it slowly, but I did manage to get in waist high, precisely in front of the horses as they ran towards me and achieved this photograph. I love this photograph, not because of how it looks but because it helped me grow.
