HORSE PRINT | FUN
Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, Early Evening.
Every time I go to France, I go with an expectation of achieving at least one good image.
I have been traveling for many years and I know the land, light, patterns, etc.
The question in my mind this time was, "how do I achieve something different?" I didn’t want to depend on a horse doing something different with it’s body or expressions, like kicking or biting. Instead, I wanted to use my experience to come up with a solution.
I took out a piece of paper and made my notes, I even made rough sketches. I was so organized and felt so much in control. The more I added to my lists, the more I felt in control. I started taking this list very seriously.
After shooting for a couple of days, I was very unhappy with the results. How could that be, my lists were perfect. I had every move spelled out. But the images were horrible.
At home we have a tradition, my boys and I always say to each other, “have fun” at school/work. It’s a thing we say to each other everyday.
After my shoot that night, I called home. The first question my son asked me was, “Dad, are you having fun?”
That snapped everything into place. The next day, the only thing I focused on was to enjoy myself. Not only did I achieve everything on my list, but I came back feeling happy with my results.
