Lake Clarke, Alaska, early morning. I followed mom and cub to the ocean. It was low tide the conditions were ideal for clamming.
It was very interesting to see how the mom taught her cub. They had an unspoken agreement-whatever mom does; cub must do. The cub did not know where to start, so mom walked over, stepped on a clam, pulled back her paws, took a sniff, put her paws back on the clam and waited for it to move. Once it moved she dug up the clam and passed it over to the cub.
I followed them for hours. The cub did not catch on; he never got a clam. Mom allowed him to fail a few times before she intervened-what a great teacher!
